The article by Siran Koroukian and Alfred Rimm entitled, “The APNCU Index to Study
LBW: Is the Index Biased?,” recently published in the Journal (55:296–305, 2002) is
misleading and biased. Efforts to understand the relationship between prenatal care
(PNC) and birth outcomes will not be advanced by this article, and public health practitioners
who use this Index to assess PNC utilization will be confused. Numerous significant
problems exist with this article.
